A whole day, dedicated to a single mountain lion? That's music to our ears!

UPDATE: We had a blast at P-22 Day!

We're so thankful that the city of Los Angeles has forever designated October 22nd as P-22 Day, cementing this incredible individual into the minds and hearts of wildlife lovers worldwide.

The festival kicked off at Shane's Inspiration Griffith Park on Sunday to a buzzing crowd of animal enthusiasts ranging from respected wildlife officials and policymakers to tiny tots with painted-on whiskers. The Mountain Lion Foundation was one of over 70 exhibitors present at the event, attracting dozens of intrigued festival goers with our easy-to-build 10'x10' demo lion-proof livestock pen. Grown-ups had a chance to pick up literature on mountain lion safety and depredation prevention, including guides on how to build their own pens, and the kids got to play with some goat puppets (no pun intended) and take pictures with a P-22 mascot.

Though temperatures swelled to nearly 94 degrees, the excitement of the crowd could not be contained as various musical groups, an improv troupe, and event organizers took to the stage to celebrate Hollywood's Lion. Between sets, people milled about the park and visited a variety of exhibitor booths, which included local conservation groups and campaigns such as Citizens for LA Wildlife (CLAW) and Save LA Cougars.

Thank you to everyone who came out to P-22 Day to spread awareness about wildlife connectivity, habitat fragmentation, and the need for proper conservation in one of the country's most populated cities. We'd also like to thank the National Park Service, Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks, and the National Wildlife Federation for putting on such a wonderful event. Go P-22, and go mountain lions!

P-22 Day in Griffith Park, Los Angeles

October 22 is now forever known as P-22 Day, by official declaration of the City of LA! That's right, Los Angeles recognizes the importance of its resident cougars.

Mountain Lion Foundation will be building and demonstrating a mountain-lion proof livestock enclosure at P-22 Day this year. Come and check it out.

Mark your calendars and come celebrate P-22's special day with our second annual festival in Griffith Park. It's free and open to the public.

You can pose with P-22's likeness in a photobooth, try out a virtual reality experience of a wildlife crossing and the LA River, meet Ranger Rick, learn from experts on how to coexist with wildlife, view an urban wildlife garden installation, join in with the California Conservation Corps for a Bioblitz Dance, go on a ranger led walk, take a workshop on how to set up a wildlife camera, listen to live music, enjoy delicious food, and discover many more exhibits and activities.

Don't miss it! Our MLF Crew would love to see you!

The P-22 Day Festival is part of Urban Wildlife Week, October 15-22, a series of events across the Santa Monica Mountains and the Los Angeles area including a 50-mile hike lead by National Wildlife Federation's California Director, Beth Pratt-Bergstrom, and many partners. They will walk through the Santa Monica Mountains and Los Angeles, taking a similar path to the one that P-22 may have followed.
