In partnership with wildlife and conservation photographer, Sebastian Kennerknecht, we aim to build public pride and empathy for mountain lions as a means to change policy and potentially assist these cats in their ability to safely move through their habitat.
The Sentinels and Seekers Project will show the pride we have in the iconic cats that are currently protected and develop empathy for those lions that are not as lucky. With your support, we can raise empathy and potentially establish policy changes for three separate wildlife habitats in Washington, California and Arizona where the potential for wildlife corridors to be established is strong.
A Victory and a Request for Help
On April 16, 2020 the California Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously to list mountain lions in Southern California and the Central Coast as a candidate for protection under the state’s Endangered Species Act. The vote started a 12 month scientific review of candidacy by the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
This is a huge win for California’s environment that will bring many benefits: not only for the survival of mountain lions and the vibrancy of our state’s wild places, but also the health and safety of the public.
As the voice of the mountain lion the Mountain Lion Foundation will serve as a stakeholder in the process – as we continue to work for the survival of mountain lions in the rest of the state and beyond.

Coexisting with Cougars in Washington
Each state poses its own unique challenges when balancing the needs of people and the needs of wildlife. Today, Washington residents live alongside approximately 1,900 – 2,100 adult cougars. In an ever-changing landscape, both people and cougars are slowly learning to adapt to the presence of one another.
These native cats, elusive by nature, slip by under the cover of darkness to avoid our detection. Our mission is to help Washingtonians coexist peacefully with these magnificent and enigmatic cats through engaging community presentations and advocacy efforts.
We also hope to improve conditions for cougars in the state by working with decision makers. In recent years, around 214 cougars on average were killed by hunters. In 2018, a staggering 101 cougars were killed in the name of public safety. Often, cats are killed when they mistake livestock for prey. Which begs the question, can we learn to live together?

Utah’s cougars are under threat. Recent anti-predator bills like House Bill 125 and House Bill 228 clearly show us that cougars in Utah face an uphill battle. Last year, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources increased the number of cougar permits available to hunters to 690 for the 2019-2020 season. Then, in January, they re-opened closed hunt units and increased the number of permits available by 117 in 11 areas across Utah in hopes of boosting mule deer numbers. However, a recent study found that targeting cougars to increase mule deer could potentially backfire.
With hunting quotas that already exceed what experts have determined as sustainable, we need to take action today to protect cougars in Utah!
Your donations will help us put on community events, workshops, working with domestic animal owners, video equipment to monitor Utah’s cougars, and attending legislative, RAC, and Wildlife Board meetings.

Through Your Bank Account
To make a recurring monthly contribution directly from your bank account, it will need to be initiated by you through your bank as an e-check or periodic payment. Please telephone an MLF staff member at 916-442-2666 for help with routing information if this is required by your bank.
Ask if your employer will match your contribution! If so, follow your organization’s matching gift process, or ask for details. If not, suggest to your employer that matching gifts are a significant benefit for employee relations.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a type of giving program that allows you to combine the most favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to easily support your favorite charities.
