More about the Mountain Lion Foundation

The Mountain Lion Foundation was founded in 1986 and is a national 501c3 non-profit organization headquartered in Sacramento, CA. The mission of the Foundation is to ensure that America’s lion survives and flourishes in the wild. The Mountain Lion Foundation has a vision of a world where lions and people coexist, where sustainability includes the persistence of the human ecosystem in harmony with viable wildlife communities, and where wildlands are nurtured and not subdued. We ensure the continuance of these native cats and the wild places they rely on for survival by fostering co-existence and informing policymakers. With a focus on education, advocacy, public outreach, and emphasizing the importance of sound science, we work with communities to preserve this keystone species.

Job Summary: The Conservation Advocate is responsible for overseeing and coordinating mountain lion conservation programs, public education programs, community organizing, volunteer development and support, and strong advocacy campaigns within their assigned territory while working closely with other MLF team members to ensure national coverage.

Western Region I encompasses California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming

Location: This position will be remote within the state of Washington. With preference given to residents within 25 miles of Olympia. Some travel to states within the assigned region or the Sacramento main office may be required.

Availability:  This is a full-time, exempt salaried position with occasional weekend work and travel on an as-needed basis. While evening work is rare, you may be expected to be available after standard hours if a situation warrants immediate attention and especially while traveling for business.

Compensation: $45-50K annually DOE

  • At least 3-5 years’ conservation advocacy experience
  • Experience running successful public education and advocacy programs
  • Knowledge and understanding of mountain lion behavior, biology, and ecology
  • Comfortable with public speaking (public presentations, working with media, and public officials)
  • An understanding and awareness of mountain lion policy issues in the United States
  • Superior written communication (i.e., writing effective press-releases, LTE, Op-Eds, and other written communication to legislators and agency leads)
  • Superior oral communication and problem-solving skills


  • Knowledge and experience using social media
  • Someone who is self-aware with a great sense of humor
  • Creative writing skills a plus
  • Bilingual Spanish/English a plus
