Our History

For nearly four decades, the Mountain Lion Foundation has worked to transform understanding into action — advancing science-based conservation, strengthening coexistence, and protecting the landscapes mountain lions need to survive.

What began in the 1980s as a grassroots effort to stop the trophy hunting of mountain lions in California has grown into a national organization working to ensure America’s lion continues to flourish in the wild.

The milestones below tell the story of that work — and of the people, partnerships, and victories that have helped shape the future of mountain lion conservation.
